Species Density

I had a thought yesterday - since I have the data from Butterfly Conservation to allow me to plot the distribution of each species, I could determine the number of species in any 10k square and plot these on a map. The result is at:

I've not seen a visualisation quite like this, so I hope you like it SU22 holds the record, with 46 species!

Wow Pete, that's brilliant!
I can conclude that I am certainly heading South next season!
It'll be interesting to see whether or how that changes as the years go by, how can we get involved with data submission?

I would like to see the list of species for each of the top 10, I live in SU23 which rates = second for species density, with 44. Yet I'll be damned if I can come up with 44 species, 43 is the best I can do. I also live in SU33 , and I'm one species short there too. There is a colony of Brown Hairstreak that could possible sneak in on the border of SU33, but if both SU23 and SU33 are listing Wall as present, I'd like to know where.

Even no 1 SU22, 46 species this area comes on the Hampshire / Wiltshire border just South West of me. Hampshire has 46 regular species, not including the Queen of Spain Frit, and Large Tort that is . I'm not sure that Wiltshire has any species that Hampshire is missing, so is it safe to assume that the Glanville Fritillary is present in SU22 area.

The map that pops up via StreetMap.co.uk are, in 9 cases the same as mine.
I have posted extracts from OS maps whilst StreetMap use, I think, TeleAtlas mapping
The apparent difference is that the border of mine follows the exact border of the 10K square, whilst the StreetMap one has the border just inside the map frame.
No.10 on the list I think you will find that Pete had linked to ST44 not ST45.
I am sure he will correct this pretty soon.

I thought they would list the Wall. Mind one of the last places that the Wall was listed as present in SU23, also had Grayling. And I was informed that both had gone extincted from that area, yet I saw a Grayling there this year, so you never know.

I've just looked at the source data and performed some queries. Unfortunately, there were several Wood White entries that shouldn't have been there. I removed these and updated the figures - the sequence of hotspots is much the same (the top 10 are the same), although some have 1 less species than they had. The 45 allocated to SU 22 are (and please note that these figures are from 1995-2004, so certain extinctions, such as High Brown Fritillary, are not accounted for):

Both Wall and Grayling cling on at Porton, and there is a Glanville colony west of salisbury (an introduction of course )

BTW - Richard Fox pointed out to me (rightly so!) that there is a species density map in both the Millenium Atlas and the State of Butterflies in Britain and Ireland.

I have ST74 as having lost 11 species since 1995 - maybe a couple of these are because the square is under-recorded, but has any square done worse?

Dark Green Fritillary, Dingy Skipper, Grayling, Green Hairstreak, Marsh Fritillary, Small Blue, Small Heath, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Wall, White Admiral and Wood White.
