Two Blues from Spain

Post by JKT »

These two are from Northern Spain (province of Burgos, altitude ~800m) from mid-June. I'm hoping the first might be Glaucopsyche melanops and I think the latter is Polyommatus dorylas. However, I've been wrong often enough, so comments are welcome!

The first is certainly melanops but I think the second is possibly a worn bellargus.

I suppose it could be P. bellargus, but I doubt it. That species had just started in large numbers and all the specimen were fresh. This obviously was anything but. The other reasons are a bit too light underside and the missing dots on the upper side of rear wings. Both could be due to the worn condition, though.

If not bellargus then I think it has to be icarus. The basal spot on the forewing underside rules out so many species.

 That actually adds one to the species count!
