it was a beautiful golden colour with distinctive spots on the underside. i only saw the single one in 3 weeks.

Looks like a female Sooty Copper (Lycaena tityrus) to me.

Some suggestions (and that's all they are!):

1. Privet hawkmoth - although I'm not sure of the white flecks.

2. The Passenger.

3. Tufted Marbled Skipper.

I agree with Pete's suggestions. At least, the first two are definitely right. The white specks on the caterpillar may be eggs of a parasitic fly. I have often seen eggs like this on Mullein moth larvae.
