Tim's up!

This quiz has run for more than one day and so, by the rules laid out by ... me  ... we need to see the answer and move on to the next question.

Personally - the "mere" clue doesn't help. It's a lake. Hmmm.

I give in.

Cheers,

- Pete

OK here's the PM Roger sent me.

The answer to my picture quiz is as follows-
1 A crumpled newspaper has been read - or RED
2 The Billbord is just a massive AD
3 Is at Woodwalton Fen, and is a MERE
4 Is Elle Mcpherson or ELLE
Giving
Read Ad Mere Elle or Red Admiral.

As it remained unsolved, and Roger is away, I'll take the liberty of setting the next question,

 I conquered the Big Ugly Bear, and I did something like one.

Thanks Gary. I don't think I would ever have gotten Roger's quiz - I can only assume he'd been on the pop when he set it

I actually dreamt about those pictures last night - and came up with loads of possible butterflies in my dreams - but none of them really works.

One of my lines of attack while I was awake was wondering what Roger would have had to type into Google to get those pictures. The first is from the American show Jeremiah, but if you type Jeremiah into Google you don't find it - you have to type the headline. For the next, you need to type the caption (into a Google image search) and not just KY.

'Mere' is not helping me either!! I do notice the word occurs backward in Jeremiah, but that is doubtless a red herring.

In my dream, the four winning butterflies were brimstone, large blue, ringlet and West Coast Lady (which in the dream was just this rather nice bird called Annabella).

Is this going to be a kickself answer, or a kick Roger answer I wonder!! :D

I did that in google before you said that funny enough, but your right, not easy to find. I was about to say before the answer came out: for woodwalton: Marsh Fritillary and last Painted Lady, definatly a cryptic question indeed.
I conquered the Big Ugly Bear, and I did something like one
Probably totally wrong..but I'll have a stab and say Deaths head Hawk Moth

Float like a BUTTERFLY, sting like a bee.

Mohammed Ali beat Sonny Liston (Big Ugly Bear) and gave quite devastating bear-hugs...

If 1 = a, 2 = b, 3 = c and so on, then what butterfly is this?

I've deliberately included some easy numbers, so non-mathematicians can guess the ones they don't know! :D

Sorry Gary, I couldn't concentrate on your question.
"I conquered the Big Ugly Bear, and I did something like one"
Did something like a bear kept going through my head. What do bears do in the woods?
Great question.

Woohoo!

OK, I've had a go at concocting a riddle. It shouldn't be too difficult.

My first is in 'big' but not in 'small'
My second is in 'short' but not in 'tall'

My third is in 'oval' and also in 'round'
My fourth is in 'grow' but not in 'ground'

My fifth is in 'dunce' but not in 'silly'
My sixth is in 'craggy' but not in 'hilly'

My seventh is in 'arid' and also in 'dry'
My eighth is in 'ground' but not in the sky

My ninth isn't me but sounds like you
My tenth is in 'sincere' but not in 'true'

My whole is a lover of meadows and sun
Most people here have seen at least one.

Because had you looked harder, you may have spotted the opportunity to move in and get a potentially great shot of Silver-Washed Frit and Purple Hairstreak (both with wings open) in the same shot?
