Caterpillar

Post by Shirley Roulston »

Is this caterpillar a butterfly? I was actually taking the Ladybird photo but I noticed the caterpillar in the corner of the photo, seems quite interesting.

I know what it is, I have been on the index pages and its a Meadow Brown caterpillar. I will have to spend more time on the front pages of this site instead of on the forum. :)

I don't think it is Shirley - Meadow Brown larvae don't have a distinct white stripe down the centre. More examples at:

http://www.leps.it/SpeciesPages/ManioJurti.htm

Also - it would be very unusual to see such a mature larva at this time of the year. I'm very sure it's a moth larva - just not sure which.

Cheers,
