Leaning photos, why?

Having seen the lighthouse on the sighting page reminds me of the photos I have recently deleted and if Jack and any one else can give me a few tips they will be appricated. The Churches I took all look at though they are falling down and the beach looks as though the entire area is falling into the sea. I used a monopod and on the liveview they all looked level so I was a bit disapointed when I got them up on the computor and so they had to go into the bin.

Hi Shirley,

Have you checked in the viewfinder to make sure that there is not a problem with the liveview?...you can always rotate these ones slightly in photoshop
Is the bracket through which your camera attaches to your monopod straight? If not it would feel odd holding the camera in the correct position.

Sea horizons never lie - so there can be no doubt you were in fact tilting the camera to the left in that picture, and doubtless in the others too. I would test whether it is you or the viewfinder by taking another picture of the sea and deliberately lining up the horizon with the very top of the picture (not for art - just as an experiment!!). In case the viewfinder gives too large a field, you should take a few perhaps, with varying gaps between the horizon and the top of the field of vision. If there is an angle in the resulting picture, you will know it is the camera. If not, you will know it is you! Either way, you'll have to be conscious of tilting the camera a bit more to the right in future!

I thought I'd carry on Jack's discussion on leaning buildings on your post, Shirley, because it seems more appropriate than on the May sightings page.

By coincidence, I took this photo this morning on my dog walk. I concentrated on getting the church spire vertical while I was taking the picture and only noticed just now, when I uploaded some piccies after my lunchtime walk, that the building on the left is leaning in dramatically. I agree, it's a rubbish picture because of the telegraph wires, but I don't think the leaning house is bad at all. In fact, I really like Gruditch's photo of the lighthouse, even though all I can now see in it is the lean!!

It depends - sometimes it is nice to leave the perspective, but sometimes it is better to remove it. There are many cases where I have removed only part of the perspective the same time I remove pincushion. Many cityscapes look unnatural without perspective.

Agreed. It's one of the easiest mistake to make when taking the photo, and one of the easiest to correct afterwards provided there's enough crop room.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and Ham for the beach photo, I never thought of photoshop, I'll pick the photos out of the bin and have a go at them. I see the Lilac is out in Switzerland .
