Nice pics. When visiting the red kite feeding centre in West Wales recently, I noticed that many birds had those wing tags. I appreciate that reintroduced birds need to be monitored but I wonder why the tags have to be so big and ugly.
I snapped this newly arrived migrant blackcap at my local reserve yesterday.

Lovely photos of the Kites and Buzzards and your Blackcap Eccles, another first to-day for me never ever came near to getting a photo, heard them many times before. I've never enjoyed a camera and lens as much as this combination the Sony A100 with 500mm reflex lens.

Why spoil a nice thread, its nature and my the amount of people viewing the photos its very popular indeed. There's a website called Garden Birds and they have butterflies why cannot we continue this thread.

Thank you Shirley & eccles for your coments Regarding the tags on kites I agree there over the top and spoil good photos.We have two kite roosts near by where 50+ kites come in late pm.The spotters use telescopes to record the details without approaching the kites hence the large tags.The 500m lens you are both using looks very handy ,nothing like it for canon in that price range. I'd also like to keep this one going but maybe under a new category? That way, Gary and anyone else not interested in birds can just ignore the posts altogether.

WD on capturing the green woodpecker, Shirley. With their loud laughing call you'd think they'd be easy to spot but despite hearing them often I've been unable to even see any this year yet alone get close enough to photograph one.

I have enjoyed the the thread, there has been some cracking shots, and some interesting images of some rarer species.
But it's just a little irritating, (now that the butterflies are out), going to see the new post in Sightings, only to find it's another Bird.
Moths, Wild flowers, other Insects, yes please, but one more Sparrow on a nut feeder, the air guns coming out.

I had a male Reed Bunting in the garden during the winter months, cracking little birds.

Some fantastic photo's on this this thread. I am quite envious. Wish that I never sold my dust pump. They are well over £1,000 now!

The list you see qualifies the post with the thread it's in. "Not Lepidoptera" is a pretty good clue

Thanks for the correction.
Funny, I saw a reed bunting at Cosmeston Lake last year and recognised it straight away. I saw a real stonechat at Aust a few months ago and missed a potential shot because I'd left the camera in the car. Perhaps that was preying on my mind when I got this one wrong.
@Denise, yes these were at the feeding station at Cannop Ponds. I believe you sold the 100-400 because it was heavy. Maybe the 300mm L with a TC might suit you better?

great behavioural shot nick,
and realy nice composition, from that angle the with the fanned tail. Im even liking the added shape and texture of the acer leaf in the foreground.
lovely to see one of our commoner birds captured in such an unusual pose!

I presume that's a juvenile, so the chances are, remembering last 'summer' it's never seen the sun before and it's making the most of it.

Yesterday morning at Chew Valley Lake, these great crested grebes gave watchers a splendid treat by performing their mating dance relatively close to Herriots Bridge, and the light was nice too.
