Hi David re numbers of Adonis on Sunday I only went to a very small portions of the site but would guess saw about 20 probably missed lots as they were tucked in low due to the breeze.
I went back today and bumped into Jonathan doing the transect. who said numbers were low this year . I wasn't counting but would guess about 50 although someone on the sussex website end of August posted they had seen 100s which is possible if you were counting and went a bit further I think.

I went back to Anchor Bottom today . It was a pleasure to bump into Jonathan and Max doing the transect and catch up.
It was also good there was no breeze
I saw Adonis Blue, a few Common Blues, lots of Meadow Browns and Small Heaths and a single Painted Lady.

You can see on an even more cropped photo of the female Adonis the pollen demonstrating they are useful as well as beautiful.

Fantastic set of Adonis Katrina - I love the ethereal nature to the more distant ones and the contrast with the blast of blue from the closeups

Still haven't seen this species on UK soil this year. I'll try to put that right if I get chance.

I didn't quite make the full open wing male but still pleased with the result of the half open one I think as you can see the whole flower and the 2 different colours of blue. Still a good reason to go again next year!

This morning I met Trevor at High and Over. I had an apt elsewhere earlier so got there later than Trevor and the butterflies were quite active.
I saw Wall Browns, Common Blues, Red Admirals and whites including a mating pair of Large Whites . We then went on to Herstmonceaux

Having seen Trevors' previous post including Small Coppers at Herstmonceaux I was keen to go.
We were having a quick bite to eat when John arrived and the three of us had a good afternoon.
We saw Painted Ladies, Red Admirals, Peacocks , Small Coppers and Whites. Possibly the star of the show for me ,surprisingly, was a fresh Peacock - I like the way it has a bit of gold dust covering.
I also had attempt at getting a butterfly with the castle in the background - sort of got one but think could be improved with more patience - too many butterflies to photograph to stand in one place waiting!

So many cracking shots from today, Katrina.
A few favourites must be the Peacock on the stone seat, the blue spot Small Copper,
Painted Lady shots, but the real prize goes to the Red Admiral on Rudbeckia. Missed that one!

A great selection there Katrina - Painted Ladies and Small Coppers are providing a splendid show at the moment. I especially like the Small Copper on the michaelmas daisy seen from underneath.

It is nice to take things from different angles every now and again.
The butterflies certainly did put on a show for us.
I forgot to add we saw some Holly Blues and Speckled Woods at High and Over

Cracking shot of the Small Copper from below Katrina This species does lend itself to this type of shot well, almost as it it's reading you your rights; "You do not have to say anything but..."

That Peacock shot is a cracker too Katrina I kinda see a Spitfire parked up, just need a few aphids 'fuelling it up'
