Is it or isn't it a SSW?

Post by Stevie Blunder »

I've just been looking back on photos I took on this day in recent years and came across this one. It was taken on July 12th 2018 at Aston Rowant NNR. I'm curious. Have I inadvertently photographed a Small Southern White or is it a common or garden Small White. I'm grateful for any thoughts. TIA.

I would say it's just a Small as the black marking doesn't go down the rear of the wing far enough, it should go down so it's in line with the cell spot in the middle of the wing. I would love to be corrected though  8)

Have a goodun

I agree with Wurzel. Also the trailing edge of the forewing looks too straight, it has a tendency to be more curved giving the forewing a more rounded appearance in mannii and the dark dusting of scales on the underside should be more evenly spread. I'm sure there are other features that also point towards rapae.

Thanks anyway. I'm sure someone will spot one in the UK soon.
