Sooty Copper

Post by Wolfson »

I have seen a few male Sooty Copper but don’t recall seeing one with the pale markings on the hind wings before, has anyone else come across this.

Looking through my pictures, I find a very few, both males and females, have some pale scales there. Here is a male - not so well marked as yours:

A caeruleounctata Sooty Copper....if such a thing officially exists!! Well done, Wolfson.

We saw a couple of Iberian Sooty Coppers with these blue markings in Spain last month, so clearly it's not just phlaeas that carries them.

Thank you David, I was hoping it doesn’t exist since I can’t pronounce let alone spell that ab.

You have made me revisit my photos from the summer. I found Sooty Copper with pale markings on forewing and Iberian Sooty Copper on hind wing . More common than I thought

Thanks, Andy. I didn't get a very good image of the bleusi with the blue spots during my last trip.

Nice you've found one to show us.
