This looks like a large tort to me!

Whilst surfing the net came upon this site from Hastings....I think nthe photo looks like a large tort as opposed to a small....what do you reckon?

I don't know much about American butterflies so can't help I'm afraid. :lol:

I should add that the text says they are Nymphalis californica.

They are indeed California tortoiseshells, Nymphalis californica. This is sometimes regarded as the same species as the European N. polychloros (the large tortoiseshell) and certainly has the same general appearance. However, there are visible differences, such as the three spots instead of four on the forewing.
