Hover Flies

Post by Tony Moore »

Hi All,

Any 'Flymen' out there who could ID this for me. I saw it this afternoon while looking for PH eggs ( found two, quite quickly, since you ask :D ). A handsome beastie, I thought :) . Actually, I seem to be developing an unhealthy interest in Hover Flies  . I may even have to buy an anorak soon  . Is there a reasonable beginner's book that anyone can recommend? Ideally so that I can ID the commoner species without having to turn them over and look at their b***s under a microscope   .

I am not sure what hoverfly that is, but if you want a book, I'd suggest this one:

Collins complete British Insects. I have it and its great for insects of all sorts, has flies/wasps/caterpillars/moths/butterflies/beetles/dragonflies/damselflies and more in it. Has 1500 species in it. Great photos too

I think this is Mesembrina meridiana, which is not a hoverfly. A pretty conspicuous fly though.

Hi Matsukase,

Thanks for that. I guess, in my ignorance, I just assumed it was a HF. So much to learn

Tony.
