Week 11
Hopefully the rather large Nordic gentleman has paid you a visit! Happy Christmas one and all!
Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Re: Meadow Brown - Favourite Photo of 2022
Visited my local meadow in Aberdeen mid June to see my first meadow brown of the year. They continued to be active through till end of July. Best photos attached. Merry Christmas .

This striking female from Daneway Bank gets my vote this year
Some addictions are good for the soul!

This female at Cosmeston Lakes, near Cardiff, on 19th August was probably the best of the few images I took of this species in 2022:

This is a species that I always overlook when it comes to photography. I have made an early New Year's Resolution to pay more attention to the commoner species this year.
The female underside, when viewed up close, is actually quite intricately marked and rather attractive for what is at first glance a fairly drab an unremarkable speies.

As always, this species became abundant on my local patch during June, with counts exceeding 200 around the middle of the month. My favourite shots are all undersides from this early part of the summer (my indisposition during the peak of the summer heat meant I don't know how they fared during this latter period, but I know the main grassy area where they fly was mown early this year which will have had an effect on numbers too).

Considering the numbers around, pairings are surprisingly difficult to find and approach. I suspect they hide well out of sight in longer grass.Dave

My favourite Meadow Brown Photograph is the only image I took of this species in 2022. My attention was drawn to this fresh female by her spread out pose.

Meadow Brown
Somehow or other when it came to arranging the threads for the Favourite posts I missed this species out! This year I was on the boil and this was probably one of the first ‘Favourites” that I chose. I’ve read various things about the level of spotting on the underside of Meadow Browns over the years but this one was so well marked that it was the obvious choice for my Favourite shot of this species.

Lots of Meadow Browns around my local spots in 2022 but their peak flight period coincided with the warmest temperatures meaning that they were usually difficult to get close to. Consequently, I took very few photos of which the female below was probably my best effort.
Cheers Neil.

Not taken in the UK but this beautifully marked female was my favourite of the year. Kefalonia

They really are quite stunning in southern Europe, Steve. That one's a beauty.

The Meadow Brown tends to get overlooked by we photographers, hence I've not many decent ones to choose from, but I do rather like this one feeding from marsh thistle, taken in the Lincolnshire Limewoods during June.
