Green-veined White - Favourite Photo of 2022

Week 7

Here we are at Lucky Week 7! With the Winter Social been and gone hopefully these threads will help keep us going until the next season.

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Have a goodun

I saw the Green Veined White on and off from April up to August, ( that's when I took the photos) but they were frequent visitors after that time, I was short of flowers in the garden to have them stay very long, ( I hope to rectify this next year :D )Goldie :D

An obliging couple on bluebells provided my favourite this year.

Looking back, it seems that all the most memorable shots of this species came from the early days of their first brood in April. These were all taken local to me - the species did well here in spring but not so well later on, probably related to the hot dry weather.

Like Dave, I saw most of these in the spring brood, I don't think they like long periods of hot, dry conditions. This ones from back in April

Unlike some comments above, I didn't see that many Green-veined Whites this spring and they were more numerous in early summer. This was before the prolonged dry weather which did have effect on numbers later in the year when they became quite scarce around here.
My favourite shots this year were both taken in my garden in early June.

I was impressed with the brazen couldn't care less attitude of these two Green-veined Whites going about their business in our butterfly garden. Let's be conspicuous, they declared - nothing better than doing it on a cowslip!

Green-Veins had an excellent season this year locally (mid-Kent ) and i observed them at many sites ,probably my favouriteof the White clan .The first two are from the spring brood and the last two from the late summer brood.

I regularly struggle to get decent images of this species even though it's fairly common near where I live.

This male seen at the High Brown Fritillary site, near Ewenny, Glamorgan, was probably the best of a bad bunch:

Green-veined White

This one was taken at Five Rivers right at the start of the year. I was trailing along the Banks looking specifically for this species as I’d already had a few runs in with one earlier in the day but not got the classic closed wing shot that I was after. As I scanned across the typical verdant green of early spring this butterfly stood out as a lemon triangle. I got as close as I thought I’d be able to and then a little closer and a little closer still and so on and so on until I was right up and so close I was worried that my beard might tickle it and send it fluttering off. I just love the way that the dark lines from a distance become an exercise in pointillism as your proximity decreases.

This fresh, summer brood female, seen locally on 26 July, was the best of the 'fairer sex' that I photographed in 2022:

That's a very esoteric way of putting it, Wurzel - but I know what you mean. :) I love the way white butterflies (including Orange Tips) convey the impression of mossy green markings simply by having black scales over lemon yellow.

Taken locally in Hertfordshire. They were in copula on a track used by cyclists, so were helped to the safety of a nearby bush.
