Dingy Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2022

Week 4

Last week I wondered how many butterflies would still be on the wing – possibly not as many as there could have been after the series of deluges we’ve had…still on a lighter note the Shops have already started selling Christmas goods!

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.
Here we got then!

I don't think I saw that many Dingies overall this year either, but a handful come to mind. One from Aston Rowant on 16th May:

Another at Totternhoe warming up on a chilly morning on 13th May:

Finally, on a visit to a third Chiltern location on 30th April (Incombe Hole) a nectaring Dingy was approached by a Grizzly:

It was a pity I hadn't zoomed into to this unusual combination until the Dingy had been displaced by the smaller butterfly, so it's not very sharp.

Again, I am unable to choose between two images. Both are from very pleasant days out. The first required getting too close to Stinging Nettles. The second invoked a day of strong May sunshine. Looking forward to April already!

Dingy Skipper

The Dingy Skippers took their time arriving this year. This one was my first from Martin Down. When I looked back at the images I couldn’t choose between the two as the first showed a lovely fresh individual with the ‘Native American Chieftain’ visible in the markings on the fore wings (perhaps Cherokee Skipper would be a better name for this species?) and the second was a nice view of the underside which I don’t see that often. In the end I gave up choosing and opted for both.

This one was notable for being the earliest I've ever seen in the UK, taken on 16th April at Whiteford Burrows:

Dingy Skippers were in good numbers this year in South Lincolnshire. These two shots were taken at the end of May at the Twyford Wood BC reserve.
First, a rare glimpse of the underside whilst nectaring on their larval foodplant, bird's-foot trefoil.

A roosting shot showing just how clever the camouflage is.

I saw a few Dingy Skippers on my visit to Butser Hill on April 16th and numbers were a bit higher when I returned a couple of days later on the 18th when the photo below was taken. On both days the butterflies were very active in the warm sunshine.

One from the Chilton's, roosting in that unique way they have.
