Speckled woods

Post by Simon C »

I am surprised the "Flying this week" list on the ukbutterflies home page doesn't include the speckled wood, which is still fairly common around here (Bath). Anyone else seeing them?

Hi Simon,

Yes, I'm still seeing them in my garden, and my brother saw lots around Wick Quarry/Marshfield area at the weekend.

Thanks for the input, all.

The "Flying this week" species are derived from the database that contains the flight times for all species, among other things. If someone would be happy to determine whether this is "normal" or something specific to 2008, I'd appreciate - just too much to do! I'll then amend the flight times accordingly.

A word of caution - I'd be wary of changing flight times of species based on unusual occurrences - such as the exceptionally-early sightings of Lulworth Skipper this year!

Cheers,

- Pete
