Small Copper

Post by David Tipping »

Found a few of these on a patch of rough, marshy grassland with a mixture of wild flowers, just half a mile from home (the same place I saw the brown argus/northern brown argus featured in the identification forum). It just goes to show you should never ignore your local patch!
The photo was taken with my newly acquired Fuji s7000 and bearing in mind that it has been heavily cropped, it has retained reasonable sharpness in my opinion. I'm hoping to obtain much better results when the Raynox macro lens arrives.

I have a field near my house which the farmer has to leave as set aside. This year the meadow has really come on, and if it's a sunny morning i'm lucky enough to see the Small Copper every time.
I'm guessing he's territorial as it's always in the same area - but if try to take a picture of something else he seems to chase them off them pose for the camera. It's like pick me i'm the loveliest - which in my oppinion he certainly is.

I found I got the best results from my S7000 for this type of shot if I used the macro mode AND zoomed in a bit.

Here's one I took back in 2003 with my S7000

Oy - if you could mount them in a gold ring they'd be worth more than diamonds! What are they?

Some kind of exotic Swallowtail.

If you look at the bottom of the right hand chrysalis you can see me - wearing a red T-shirt LOL!
