Hoping that the old railway might afford some protection from today's powerful wind gusts
I headed there this morning. It was a little calmer in the railway cutting, but not much.
A thorough search of the site revealed nothing flying, but a basking Speckled Wood, and
Peacock were eventually found along with a Bee Fly.

Still the exercise was good !.

Love the image of the settled bee fly, Trevor. It's hard going right now so you should be glad you found a Speckled Wood and Peacock. Sun and warmth will return at some point!

Thanks David. The Bee Fly was some compensation for the lack of butterflies.

Today was a day of frustrating weather. It started clear, bright and sunny.
But after a short while at the old railway the sun went in. Turning around
I could see a large cloud drifting over the sun, and it would take ages to clear.

Returning home, it was afternoon before the sun shone constantly, but it was
shining through high cloud and it was now cool. Returning to the old railway
I was lucky to spot a very fine male Large White nectaring on a Dandelion,
another well marked female Specklie, two Small Whites, two Peacocks and
a male Holly Blue which only paused for a quick shot.
A male Brimstone was seen flying around some Bluebells, where it eventually
settled and spent some time nectaring.

Congratulations, I read that your first Large White of the year appears to be a national first sighting!

Congratulations on the National FFY Trevor I did very well to capture that - they're normally just a footnote on the day as they bomb past Lovely looking Specklie again - they do seem to be more nicely marked than usual this year

The forecast breeze for today actually bordered on a gale.
This hampered my search for this morning, but I eventually found a fresh female Small White
and a nicely posed male Speckled Wood, plus three tatty Peacocks and a worn Red Admiral.

This morning I found three newly emerged male Green Veined Whites, my first of the year.
They certainly were not around yesterday. In addition a fresh female Large White teased
me by landing several times the wrong side of a water filled ditch!,

Thanks Goldie. I'm glad you enjoyed the Brimstone. Should be lots of butterflies if the fine weather holds.

The old railway was alive with butterflies this afternoon, and they were all lively!.
Soon after arrival I saw my first Orange Tip of the year. It beat the first sighting of 2021 by a day.
Obtaining an image of it was another matter in the warm bright sunshine, it hardly ever stopped.
But it did pause briefly on one particular garlic mustard, several times, so I waited by the plant
and snapped away quickly when it returned again.
A male Holly Blue landed on a bramble and gradually opened up before shooting off. The first
Green Veined Whites were only seen yesterday, but there were many more today, all males so far.

Where to aim the camera next was the problem today.
