How about one last Butterfly fix
I'm planing an early October trip to Durlston Country Park, near Swanage, in search of the last Wall Brown brood of the year. I think we are looking at either the 4TH or 5TH of October, as usual weather will play it's part. So just as depression starts to set in, why not give yourself one more butterfly fix.

Found a couple in the garden today, basking on the walls of the house... don't think I can justify the journey
Re: How about one last Butterfly fix
77 miles is commutable from Bristol so pencil me in as a possible.

I would love to come, but the train station is miles away from the Durlston Country Park , plus the ticket costs the earth

Re: How about one last Butterfly fix
Thanks for the offer Chris, but to get there I would have to pass as a child, which I can do , then get to LDN St Pancras INT by FCC then by tube to LDN waterloo, then SWT to Eastleigh... but then a Bus to Bournemouth for value for money. Now I have no idea of the buses because I can't tell where they are off to. Its not like the trains where there are platform anouncements.
So I am not sure
But the closest I can get to Swanage is Wareham, but it taks 4 hours 30 mins not including 30mins to walk to the station, then another about 1 hour 30 mins to walk to corfe castle station from which I will travel to Swange, then another aprox 30 mins from Swanage staion to the country park. what time does everyone want to be there? the journey will take me about 8 hours (not taking into account the reliability of public transport!!!!)

Re: How about one last Butterfly fix
OK lets make it for Saturday the 4TH, to meet in the car park between 9 and 9.30am.
I would advise bringing along a longer lens, as-well as your Macro's, as there is plenty of other stuff to see, especially if the butterflies don't play ball.
It will be nice to meet you Chisc1, and check your PM's Mouse

Can you add another hour to that time, Gary? It's at least two hours from Bristol, and I'll be picking up at least one, probably two others.
Or another possibility would be if anyone has a hand held GPS and a mobile phone I could get there a bit later, phone you and get your GPS grid reference to catch up with you.

No probs, we'll exchange mobiles, you can ring us ( only when it's safe to ring ) when you reach to Swanage, then we will walk back, and meet you at the car park.

Where abouts are you, Gruditch? If the sun is going to be shining on Saturday I may well make the effort even though it is a long way. I have never seen Wall butterflies before.Gruditch wrote:I've room for one more, if you can get to me Susie.Susie wrote:I was thinking about going, I would have liked to meet Denise. Re: How about one last Butterfly fix
Could still be plenty of butterflies about if last Sunday just along the coast at Lulworth is anything to go by. Plenty of whites and nymphalids fluttering around generally, especially in the village where the whites were attracted to Red Valerian in gardens and on walls. A few browns about on the Bindon Hill downland, probably including Wall Brown but the only ones that were stopping for a proper look were Meadow Browns - still quite fresh - and an out-of-habitat Speckled Wood. Also still on the wing there is Adonis Blue; one not-too-worn female seen in a brief period spent looking.
Re: How about one last Butterfly fix
I may well be going but alot depends on the weather. It will be a long drive for a walk around in the rain even if there are other things to see there.

Re: How about one last Butterfly fix
The weather is starting to look OK for Saturday, and a Wall was spotted yesterday the 29TH.

Re: How about one last Butterfly fix
Let's hope it carries on that way. Your forecast is looking better than ours for Saturday.
Is there only one carpark at Durlston?
Hey, Mouse, if you ask nicely someone might be able to put you up for the night.
