Black Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2021

Week 1

Another year and another set of Favourite Photos! I swear it comes round quicker and quicker!

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Also a quick reminder that it might be a good idea to select your Overall Favourite Butterfly Photo of 2021 first so that you’ve got something to post when the series of threads culminates in 20 weeks time…

Anyway in the words of Eric Robson; “Onwards and upwards”.

Have a goodun and stay safe

I didn't do particularly well with this species in 2021. I tried the recently revealed site on Epsom Common on 16th June (a particularly warm day) and came away with quite a few sightings but no worthwhile photos. I also went up to the more traditional location of Whitecross Green Wood on 22nd June, but it was a cloudy day with not enough brightness to mobilise the butterflies very much. However, I eventually chanced upon a female sitting out a gloomy spell in a spot that I don't usually pay much attention to.

I managed to sneak in a couple of visits to the 'new' colony on Epsom Common (they've been there for around 15 years according to the people in the know), both times in rather overcast conditions but then this year didn't give many options in that respect. I got plenty of closeups but I like how they stuck out like a sore thumb attempting to bask under the sunless sky.
