Wood White - Favourite Photo of 2020

Week 20

With almost impeccable timing the butterflies of 2021 have started to show up in earnest and the season is upon us…just as we wrap up the Favourites threads from 2020. A massive thank you to everyone that contributed over the past weeks :D – almost time to start thinking about making next years selections.

As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Have a goodun and stay safe

The first brood was missed due to lockdown part 1 but I managed to get to Chiddingfold during their second brood. Not as big an emergence as I've seen there in the past but still plenty to make the day worthwhile which started on Denbies. The first one is is the first I saw of the day, a male licking up salts.

As always, there were several courting attempts to focus on, here's a male giving a poor unsuspecting female his best flashing move

Another new one for me in 2020. Thanks to David M once again for his spot-on info on a site in the Forest of Dean. I managed to get two lifers in 2020 thanks to David's kind assistance and knowledge.

My pleasure, Stevie....and you repaid me twice over with your Large Tortoiseshell info later in the year. :)

Although I see this species in good numbers when I'm abroad, it had been a few years since I saw any in the UK, and that record threatened to continue during my attempt on 15th May at Haugh Wood in Herefordshire.

It was very cloudy and quite cool but I managed to spot a solitary roosting individual in a ride where I remembered seeing them before on a previous visit:

After accidentally posting in the wrong (last year's) thread, here is my favourite Wood White photo from 2020. Taken at Chiddingfold Forest in Surrey, back in May.

To butterfly meadows, chalk downlands and leafy glades; to summers eternal.
