Which Blue?

Post by jellyang »

Is this a common Blue?
I have no experience with identifying Blues as I have never seen anything other than a Holly Blue in my local area.
Today I went out on my first long walk since my operation & this little critter flew out of the sugarbeet field after being disturbed by my dog. Will return with macro lens tomorrow!

I've been looking at the Adonis Blue and it seems so similar to the Common Blue although much brighter, I don't suppose my photo is the Adonis, every time I take a photo of a blue I always refer to it as a Common Blue. I've looked at the Species on the web site and the Adonis is very bright blue.

Hi Shirley - this is also a Common Blue. One distinguishing feature of the Adonis Blue is that the white fringes are interspersed with black markings, giving a somewhat-chequered appearance.

Cheers,

Shirley
The blueness of blues is very variable, especially the Common Blue which can be very bright to very pale.
However, when you first see an Adonis there is no mistake - it is a vey different blue to a Common, and very obvious.
You live, I note, in North Wales - you will be fortunate indeed to see an Adonis much further north than Bristol.
Nice photo though......
