Nice to see the Speckled Woods, Goldie, and your female Small White is quite unusual. I don't ever think I've seen one with an = marking rather than a whole spot.

Your right David about the Small White, I've just had it confirmed has an ab, I'm really pleased, it was the only butterfly I got a shot of that day

Today was definitely Green Veined White day,

I saw two Male Orange Tips fly into the Garden circle round the Bowles Mauve and move on, also three Speckled Woods did the same and one Peacock landed right in front of my seat then took off, the only ones to stay were the GVW

I was pleased with this because their Green stripes were very prominent and they were so fresh looking.

The weather was Sunny but the wind once again was chilly, I found a sheltered place in the Garden but not until after lunch , even then a warm cardigan was needed, it was after 3pm before the GVW/s started to fly in and finally I got to take some shots

In the mean time I'd been watching this large Bee in the Rockery and took a couple of shots of that

I have noticed in the last few weeks I've been stuck in the Garden that very few Butterflies came before 2pm, most have arrived between that time and 3.30 pm, Just a few in the morning which arrive mostly in the front Garden and the weather then has to be really calm and warm. Tomorrow has to be cold and windy so it looks like it's House work day

Many thanks Wurzel, the wind yesterday had gusts of 30 miles an hour, I kept looking out, even sat out in a sheltered spot but it was much too windy for them to travel very far.

I can't grumble, up to now I've had 8 species and not moved out of the garden

I keep thinking a quick walk out would be okay, then I heard one of the neighbours had passed a way, so that put me off

We'll get over this eventually and first thing I'll do is look for that elusive Grizzled Skipper

Love the Green Veined White shots, Goldie, especially the third one where the light has been captured particularly well.

Haven't seen too many on my patch so far this year. I do hope this isn't another species soon to be under threat.

Thanks David, I was lucky, I was packing up to go inside when the first one came and after that three more arrived one after the other, I don't remember seeing so many all at once in the Garden, then again I'm usually out looking else where at this time of year

Hope you see a few more soon.

I just took one shot today of a Peacock, It looked really blown about and stopped in the Rockery flapping it's wings to warm up, then it took off again, two Small White's also whizzed through I hope the wind eases down tomorrow, I'm really tempted to go further a field to see if I can find a Holly Blue or Brimstone.Goldie

Over the last couple of days most of the Butterflies I've seen have not stopped in the Garden looked a round and then carried on, today I'd 3 OT's, 2 Speckies, 12 SW , 1 Peacock

2 LW, I managed two shots Only

One Small White I'm sure was the same ab I saw on the 17th, 22nd, and today and the only Small White that stopped. This seems unusual if I'm right.

The Large White appeared at 5 pm just has I was packing my garden stuff a way, the Small Whites that did come in the Garden found others already in and that was that

Today was a much better day than yesterday, no clouds, very little breeze, very warm,

Loads of Butterflies flew in and out of the garden and today I managed to get some shots but you really had to be quick, the Butterflies were busy but at least they put down briefly.

I was surprised when a Small Tort put down, it was in a bad way but I think still deserved a post

Another Female Orange Tip showed up and I was lucky this one didn't fly through like the Males yesterday.
When this really well marked Green Veined White put in an appearance I was well satisfied, then to finish off a Large White settled briefly, most of the Small Whites I saw didn't settle but I counted quite a lot but I was too busy trying for the other's, the SW's seemed to arrive at the same time has the others so I'd to prioritise

Good to see the aged Small Tort still going strong

- a good work capturing the Large White- I've seen one or two now but not got anything on my memory card yet

By the way did your aberrant Small White have a name as I think I saw a similar looking one a few days back?

Hi! Wurzel, I'm not sure , but I think the ab is called "binigrata" but I could be wrong

I seem to have got lot's of Large White's coming through the Garden at present, also I saw a small GVW but couldn't get a shot, they're too quick at present

I was surprised to see the the Small Tort, it was flying pretty good and was just has quick as ever

I think that ab is called ab.divisa based on the description on here

Your garden is attracting plenty of Pierids, Goldie. Nice underside images of both Small and Green Veined White.

I agree, a Small Tortoiseshell is always worthy of attention, irrespective of its condition.

I do like your Green-veined Whites, Goldie.

Such an attractive species when fresh, as all yours seem to be. Your grape hyacinths (muscari) seem to attract a variety of species, unlike those growing near me which never have a butterfly near them!

Thanks everybody for your posts, I wasn't sure about the name of the ab so thanks for that Bugboy

The Butterflies over the last three days have been hit and miss, so many Whites , Large, Small, I'm not sure about the Green Veined, if any landed they weren't marked very strong and were too quick for me to get shots of, in the end I gave up and did some gardening

Today it started raining about 3pm and was very dull before that so it looks like a few days of rain will do the Garden good and may slow the Butterflies down for a while when the weather picks up again ( Hope fully the rain won't last long) Goldie

I don't mind too much the garden looks a lot healthier now and with the promise of warmer weather next week, roll on

I'm doing a puzzle sent by my Daughter to keep my head busy

It's got 1, 000 pieces and it's certainly doing that

Doing my Head in Wurzel

I went into the Garage to get a sweeping brush today and there on the floor near the car was what I thought was a Moth at first,
then I realised it was a Dead Tortoiseshell Butterfly, I've often wondered where they went but never thought my Garage would be the place when one died

It's made me feel sad with so much death around at present, it's in good condition and complete even it's colour is lovely, I'd love to put it some where and keep it, just to look at it in the Winter month's, if that doesn't sound too melancholy!! It seems a shame not to keep it some where, I've not a clue how to preserve it though.

On a more pleasent note, I've not seen any live Butterflies since the rain arrived , I did take a shot of a Small White in the Garden from a distance on the 25th of April, that's the last time I saw one and the Cornflowers are out in the Garden and just waiting for them

Hope fully the clouds the wind and rain will give us a break soon
