Difference between male and female HBF?

Post by richard »

Thanks for you help with the upper wing spot on HBF vs DGF.

Does anyone know how to differentiate between male and female HBF (either from above or below) please??

I have heard of the term sex brand but an not sure what that is. Actually, I will now try googling that term but might get some 'interesting' results!

Pete,

It does help but I cannot see the pictures of the females 1, 2 + 3.

Sorry to be a pain but I cannot make out the sex brands on the upper wings of the fritillaries. I know where they are on skippers and on the Wall so I guess across the forewing?

Would it be possible to give me the links for the female shots in the other thread for comparison.

I did google and got lots of unrelated hits!!

Much appreciated,

Richard

Hi Richard,

Not quite sure what's going on there. Can you see the image at this link?

I can see that image. Wonder if reason I cannot see other link is something to do with my firewall.

That is *really* helpful - many thanks.

Can I guess that top left is a DGF, top right HBF
and bottom one is SWF?

Again, your help much appreciated.
