Green-veined White - Favourite Photo of 2019

Week 7

Another week passes and we’re another week closer to the new season starting – only another 3 months to go now! Closer than that is the Winter Social at the newly refurbished Old Forge, Otterbourne next Saturday – hope to see you there! :D

Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos as then it will be easier to keep track of things? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As in previous years details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Have a goodun

My photo was taken on a late-August day when my Son joined me in a hunt for Brown Hairstreak along the Roman Road from Beckley onto Otmoor. We only managed one sighting of a single very worn individual but, by way of compensation, I spotted this mating pair of GvW along the path that runs along the Southern edge of the RSPB Otmoor reserve.

During a visit to Inverness-shire back in June, I was pleased to find this mating pair of Green-veined White (ssp.thomsoni) calmly settled on a bracken frond and in no hurry to fly off.

Flicking through my photos this one lept out as a favourite. I love the ethereal look about it :)

My earliest sighting this year for this species in the south of France was the 9th of March.
Here is one of the few photos I took:

Took very few Green -vein pictures this season ,of the few that I did manage these are my favourites . The individual
feeding from a leaf filled puddle was taken in the Orlestone forest on a very hot (24 c ) day on the 20th April.
The other an autumn brood ,also from Orlestone . Allan.W.

Very few spring brood Green-veined Whites around this year but numbers picked up for the summer brood.

My favourite photos were of a female that hung around my garden for a couple of days in May and kept returning to one particular dandelionn seed head.

After a wet night she was still there the next day and I caught here opening her wings as it brightened up just before she took off again.

A couple of examples stand out for me - firstly a nice new female second brooder seen up at Arnside on 13th July.

Secondly, a pair found much closer to home on 30th June: one male and one female, showing the contrasting colours of the undersides.

Green-veined White

This was quite a tricky species to choose my favourite for as I didn’t have that many encounters with them this year, at least encounters when they behaved well enough for some photos to be taken. This one was taken at Bentley Wood during a break from some searching for Purple Emperors at Bentley Wood. I chose this one as t was the closest that I managed to get to this species pretty much all year.

Guilty again of not paying this species sufficient attention in 2019.

The best underside shot I got was this on 15th August in Pembrokeshire:

This late female (6 October in Abergavenny) was also very attractive:
