Buddleia davidii 'bicolor'

Post by Piers »

Greetings Buddleia fans...

Does anyone here have the davidii variety 'bicolor'...?

That's the only name that I know of, I don't think that it was ever one of the varieties that was given an alternative butterfly name (davidii Dartmoor = Camberwell Beauty etc. etc.) so that's all the info on the name that I can give...

Thanks in advance...

Felix.

Hi Felix,

I nearly bought one off of Ebay earlier in the year, but didn't in the end. I haven't seen one for sale in the UK since. If you get one then please let me know how you get on with it.

Sorry to not be able to be of help,

Susie

Hi Susie,

As a bit of a buddleia collector I am desperate for a bicolor - it is rare outside of the US although (like you) I have seen the odd one or two for sale in the UK but not taken the plunge when i should have (he who hesitates is indeed lost).

My offer to anyone who has one will be to exchange a rooted cutting of bicolor for a purchased buddleia of their choice, which I shall gladly buy for them (perhaps the fantastic new variety 'Summerhouse Blue'...)

Thanks for responding though Susie, I greatly appreciate it.

Out of interest, which buddleias do you have, Felix?

I am still keeping an eye out for a bicolour (or indeed a tricolor or a multicolor!). If I find a source online I shall let you know. If I get one then you are welcome to a cutting, which I will happily try to root for you.

Thanks Susie, that's very good of you. And true to my word I shall buy you a plant of your choice in return.

I have built up the following selection of davidii colour varieties:

Royal Red, Pink Delight, Blue Horizon, White Proffusion, White Wings, Dartmoor, Summerhouse Blue, Harlequin, Black Knight, Silver Anniversary, Royal Purple.

Wanted: Orchid Beauty, Les Neale, Southcombe Splendour, Bicolor.

I also have a few other non-davidii buddleia such as alternifoilia, globosa etc...

I may just have one of these multi colour buddleia.

Last year I ordered one from a mail order catologue. I also raised some seeds from my usual buddleia. So I then had 3 plants in pots but forgot to label them

Two of these small plants now have tiny flower heads, which look a very normal purple colour, the third one has lots of greenery but no flowers.

If pot 3 does flower you will be the first to know but we may have to wait for next year!

UPDATE

There is a Bi-colour Buddleia on the J. Parker website. I am sure this was where I bought one last year :?:

Problem is I am a jelly brain & really can not remember! :?

Should my plant ever flower (suppose I could have been nurturing a weed for the last year) it will be a lovely suprise.

Plant ordered. :D

The only downside is that I now have to twiddle my thumbs until it is delivered in November.

Bicolor was developed by Dr Michael Dirr at the university of Oregon as a cross between B.X weyeriana" honeycomb" ( the davidii globosa hybrid and B. Davidii. It is a back cross with davidii. It would be interesting to see what it produces in the way of seed.

If you look at it carefully the flower spikes are not as solid as davidii.

Flower power is another name for buddliea bicolor.

Here is a link so you can see what the flower looks like. http://www.guardiangardencentre.co.uk/i ... e_id=48661

I bought mine from the J Parker website.
