European Butterflies Magazine

Post by jasonsargerson »

This is a new topic to provide information and discussion about European Butterflies Magazine.

The first issue of the magazine was in April 2018.

The thinking behind the magazine is to produce a well illustrated and informative magazine about the butterflies of Europe.

Advertising is kept to a maximum of 10% of the magazine, so only 3 pages in a 36 page magazine.

Contributions are welcome from individuals, societies and commercial organisations.

The European Butterflies Group produced an excellent 10 year anniversary magazine, but informed me that they did not intend to produce further magazines. They still produce a twice yearly newsletter, available on line. So, my magazine is complementary to their information.

The standard of the contributions has been very high, including very good quality photographs.

The magazine should not date, so the articles will build into a library of information about different places in Europe.

The first issue is still available direct from me - see my website, or from me via Amazon or from Pemberley Books.

Here are some examples of the excellent photography in the 2018 issue of European Butterflies Magazine:

David Irven took these photos in Graubunden - Small Apollo, with the characteristic link between the red forewing spots

Little Fritillary - a very rare butterfly found in Graubunden on Aster.

Robin Fox manages to take photos of butterflies on his hands (they always land on my camera hand) - Thor's Fritillary in Italy.

Roger Gibbons takes artistic photos of butterflies, with little depth of field - Violet Copper in France.

Pleased to say mine dropped through the door today, and it has made me yearn even more for my Pyrenees trip next month.

I am pleased to say my website www.jasonsargerson.uk has now been updated with the full details of European Butterflies Magazine 2019.

It is probably stating the obvious, but it is best for me (financially) if you order direct from me.

Although it is very useful to have the option of purchase using Paypal or credit or debit cards through Pemberley Books, NHBS or Amazon.

Each magazine is £7.50, or buy both from me for £12.00, including postage.

My website has a good choice at the moment with 6 books, 2 DVDs and 2 magazines available.

I attach the scan of the cover and some further sample photos from the 2019 magazine.

I have just returned from Switzerland and been to the Cardinal site near Martigny. (See my personal diary).

I hope to write an article about the Cardinals for the next issue of European Butterflies.

That article will be interesting, Jason. I believe Cardinals were not recorded from Switzerland until relatively recently?

I hope to be able to include an article about Biberbrugg, in central Switzerland, in the next issue of European Butterflies Magazine.

This is an interesting site, with common butterflies, wetland butterflies and woodland butterflies.

See video of Map Butterfly and Scarce Large Blue.

I met with Peter Cawdell of the Lincolnshire Branch of Butterfly Conservation on Wednesday 18th September.

I donated to the Lincolnshire Branch copies of the first edition (2018) of European Butterflies Magazine.

So, if you are looking for a bargain see the Lincolnshire Branch sales stand.

I still have copies if you contact me.

Some examples of pages and cover again.

Hello David

The general plan for the next issue of European Butterflies is:

I will contact all the potential contributors by October 1st.

I hope to receive articles from contributors by December 1st, latest January 1st.

I will take the draft to my designer in January and it will be printed in March 2020.

I have had the first article submitted, by James Gibbs about La Chapelle, a favourite butterfly site in France.

Thanks for this, Jason. I'm sure I can conjure something up between now and 1st December.

Nice Niobe Fritillary image. This is a species that fared very poorly in those areas of Europe I visited in 2019. I hope this was a one-off.

I met Sean Clough of the Yorkshire Branch of Butterfly Conservation today.

I passed on to him copies of the first issue of European Butterflies Magazine (2018).

The Yorkshire branch should be selling them at a bargain price at their members meeting at the end of October and on their sales stand in future.

I have about 15 copies left now - so if you would like a copy contact me soon.

I also have about 40 copies of the 2019 issue left - so buy both for £12.00 including postage.

I have received another article for the next issue of European Butterflies magazine.

Georgy Liptovszky has written about butterfly sites to visit in Northern Hungary.

He has supplied an excellent set of photos.

Here are two examples - the beautiful sheen on the Poplar Admiral must be when it is brand new.

I have no copies of European Butterflies Magazine Spring 2018 Issue 1 left now.

Pemberley Books have taken the last remaining copies, so if you would still like a copy, please order from Pemberley Books.

I still have plenty of copies of the Spring 2019 Issue 2.
