What about mixing up some sugar and water and coating your boot in it so that the butterflies come to you?

Any way I'm still going on the Holiday, I'll just keep steady and not do too much walking!!!! That'll be the day If any body knows where in Eastbourne I can see Butterflies and not walk too far please let me know

Sad to hear that, Goldie. Good to see you're not letting it beat you though. As you say, maybe this is the final chapter in the bad luck series.

Well I'm back !!!

Thanks David for your post on the 29th May, we did have a good journey but the journey back was awful, the weather was rough and they'd closed two lanes of the M1 so a lot of traffic was on the M40 .
We set off from Eastbourne at 8.45 am and I finally got home at 8pm UGH! I wasn't bothered really I'd had a good time and been motored about doing nothing, we'd had one day of rain that's all and if I'd been at home I wouldn't have got out to see any Butterflies

I didn't see any Grizzlies:

on the Tuesday it rained all day and although we went to Beachy Head on the Wednesday ( I nearly got blown off the top

) I saw only two Butterflies which I was really glad to see not having them on my list of species yet

The Common Blue and a Small Copper. I only managed one shot of the Common Blue today

I also got a shot of a Cream Spot Tiger moth which I'd not seen before, ( I'd to look the name up in GB Moth's

) I was thrilled to see it, it's colours were so out standing

Can't understand it's choice of landing though

I was also taken aback by the wild flowers up there, really out standing

That evening we saw from the Hotel the planes going over to Portsmouth for the celebrations the pier there was crowded with people

So Wednesday ended on a really good note. Goldie

On Thursday we went to Scotney Castle, I'm not too keen on going round Country houses or Castles,
I find them usually dark and morbid but it was a case of give and take so I went in with my Sister-in-Law because she'd gone up Beachy Head with me

Of course I couldn't go up to see the bedrooms with my foot, so I hopped out-side into the walled Garden waiting for her

I was surprised in this Walled Garden when I saw this little Holly Blue land where it did.

It was more like a Hall we'd gone through not a house, the real Castle was at the bottom of the Hill which I thought strange for a Castle, It was in a really lovely setting, although a ruin it still had a Tower of sorts and a lovely Moat full of Water Lilies, at the side of the Moat a small field had been left for wild flowers and it was in there I saw more Common Blue, and I was chuffed to see a Large Skipper.

I know this year I'll miss out on a lot of Butterflies so when I see some I may not get to see I'm thrilled

I also saw this rather Black looking Dragon Fly, at first I thought it was a Butterfly

when it landed on some yellow leaves I managed a shot

That was my five day' s Two of travel, One of Rain, Two lovely days when I saw the Butterflies, I'd a really good time but the next few days I hope I see Butterflies in the Garden again

Great to see you back out and about Goldie

Thta is the great thing about visiting the big Stately Homes - they often have cracking gardens and the walled ones in particular are great for butterflies -

less wind, sun trapping and plenty of nectar

Love the shots of the Small Copper, Large Skipper and the Blues

I reckon that dragonfly is a Beautiful Demoiselle?

Hi! Wurzel, I was hoping I'd see some Butterflies in the Gardens, I don't get Common Blues, Small Coppers in my Garden and I only once saw a Skipper there, so to find some was a bonus

Now I've to have patience for another four weeks than maybe I can get going driving again

Glad you liked the the three some

I was surprised the CB's looked a bit worn they don't seem to have been out that long, the weather I suppose .Goldie

Glad you managed to get out a few times, Goldie, even if the Grizzlies continued to elude you.

That castle has a distinct 'Constable' look about it, although like you, I prefer to admire from the exterior rather than venturing inside.

Thanks for your post David, It was a fantasy castle even if there wasn't much of it

I'm glad I got some Butterflies but with this Boot on my foot I can't be on uneven ground taking shots ,

I've had to take quick ones and take pot luck when I've done this

so it could be the Grizzle would be too quick for me

Your holiday looks like a real success Goldie, and the butterfly shots are gorgeous. Especially love the Small Copper. I haven't seen any Skippers at all yet. Janet

An interesting day out with some nice sightings, I am also waiting for my first skippers as others appear to be.
I agree with Wurzel, the dragonfly is a male Beautiful Demoiselle. a species I have not seen yet, locally we only get the similar Banded Demoiselle. Phil

Many thanks Janet, I was pleased to see the Large Skipper more so because I've not been able to get out much with my booted foot

Trust me to do some injury at this time of year.

I see the Small Pearls are out at Warton and the Northern Brown Argus at Gait Barrow if your interested Goldie

Hi! Phil, Many thanks for your post, for once last Thursday the weather was lovely, I think that's why the Skipper appeared, I don't think it'd been out long because it wasn't doing the usual bobing about.

Sorry you never got your Grizzlie Goldie ,had a one hour visit this late afternoon to a local site and was quite surprised to find 4 ,
including a freshly emerged individual (and Abberant as well !),weather permitting I,m going to have a look at another site tomorrow, after work to see if theres any still flying there ,they seem to have done quite well locally this year.
As I,ve already said ,when you're down next spring I,ll be happy to show you some. Regards Allan.W.

Nice shots of that Large Skipper, Goldie. They've been very thin on the ground near me this year. I think the weather has stopped them in their tracks just as they started to get going.

I should be down there again some time this Summer hope fully looking for some Cloudies

I'll probably be going to Reculver again, " less walking there and a good pub my Daughter likes for lunch

" ( another way to twist the arm )

Hi! Dave, I've not been able to get out here looking for them, so to see them when I did made my day

It also made me less restless to move knowing I'd seen them, it's the rest of the Butterflies I'm going miss, most of them, Fritillaries and Northern Brown or all up in the Lakes, still may be I'll be able to drive next month, I hope so.

Hi Goldie, just seen your Cream-spot Tiger Moth from a few posts back. I have seen these a few times in Dorset and Cornwall but never managed a photo as good as yours...well done

Thanks Neil, I was really surprised when I saw the moth it was so lovely, I'm really thinking about getting some thing in the Garden to see if I can catch any, I know for a fact I get lots of visitor's . It's just making a start on doing it

The more I see the different ones the more I'm surprised at their colours and shapes.

I'm sharing your frustration Goldie - the weather just seems to have gone into a time warp - it's like we're back in April

Still it'll have to break soon and then the butterflies will be that much sweeter

HI! Wurzel, I'm frustrated, on the other hand if it was a year last last year weather wise and I couldn't get out much I'd be more frustrated,

lets hope you get some good weather in the South soon, hope fully I'll be down to Kent some time again this Summer
