Corfu

Post by PatMoore »

Hello, I wonder if anyone can identify this rather worn butterfly which crashed at my feet in NE Corfu on 19/4/19. This was at sea level, warm and within a stunning olive grove. The butterfly was quite lively but was unable to fly very far. I thought perhaps a Southern Comma or Large Tortoiseshell.
I saw quite a few species in the area, some yet to be identified so I may well post a few more pictures. Regards, Patrick.

Hi Pat. Yes, this is a female large tortoiseshell, now living out her dotage.

We look forward to any other photos from your trip to Corfu you would like to post.

Many thanks for your identification Guy. This is the first Large Tortoiseshell I have seen, despite having visited a site in West Sussex with no luck. So despite her appearance, really rather exciting.
