8th July in break between showers. Location:

Highlights
50+ Small Coppers in a stretch of path no more than 500 metres long.
100+ Small Heath, many past their sell-by dates
Also countless (1000+?) Small Skippers (no Essex identified)

No Graylings yet and indeed I saw none last year mid July. Where exactly on the heath might I hope to find them - say next week or the week after?

Hi Jack,
I haven't been there for a number of years, but I seem to remember those I saw were to the right of the main track which runs towards the river. You obviously need a sunny day, and a bit of luck as they really are masters of disappearing... only taking flight as you are about to tread on them :wink: They like the open areas with sparse low plant cover away from the trees (which unfortunately doesn't help much as it is all like that).

That's exactly where I have looked in the past without success. I might have to go further afield to the Norfolk coast next week.
