And nice shots of the SPBF - not something we're used to seeing posted on here in September! I didn't see any Walls at High & Over a week ago, and probably should have had a look today when I was in the area as they are obviously out again! Nice shots of them as well, Trevor.

Good shots from Rowland's Trevor. The place is finally becoming a really good place to go to see things. :D

I spent a great deal of today at High and Over. When I was last there Bob Eade was speculating
about a third brood of Wall Browns, todays sightings would suggest that a third brood may have started.
Altogether five fresh males and one female were found, this was my first female for a very long time.
Unfortunately I was only permitted one shot of the female Wall before she was lost.

The other feature of the day was the very large number of Whites present, and all seemed fresh.
Other Butterflies of note were several fresh Red Admirals, Peacocks and a single Comma.
In another area a lone female Common Blue was found in the grass.

A very interesting day.

Those Walls look nice and fresh, so I suspect you're right and a third brood is underway, Trevor. :) All those whites may mean they could be drifting over the Channel like the ones I saw in Kent - or maybe they're the offspring of those that did earlier.

Thanks Dave, All the Whites were fresh, even those with a few nicks.
To see the Walls, maybe a visit, if we get a fine day, next week. There may be a few more by then.
Strangely, none of today's Walls were found on the steps.

Great Wall shots Trevor :D The Comma's comma looks interesting too...more of a line than the punctuation mark :D

Tide Mills was to be my ultimate destination today, but as the best route from home
takes me past High and Over I thought I would make a quick stop.
As I entered the meadow at the bottom of the steps, two familiar figures , Bob Eade
and Dave ( millerd ) , were already searching for Wall Browns.
I was politely asked not to sit on a Red Admiral, which was waiting patiently on a bench
seat for the sun to return. Also, I was sickened to learn of a patient female Wall that had
posed for them earlier.
Several male Walls were seen and photographed, then, the prize of the day, a beautiful
female stopped several times and a couple of decent shots were obtained.
We enjoyed a period of sunshine, but generally the weather was cloudy with a cool breeze,
which made approaching a Peacock and a reasonable Meadow Brown, a little easier.

Any similarity between my images and Dave's is purely coincidental, but quite likely ! .

Good to spend the morning with you both,
Trevor.

Yes, that was rather a good morning Trevor and very good to see you and Bob too. :) Hmm - the butterflies do look awfully familiar, but it'll be a little while before I get round to posting my shots, and I don't think they are going to compete... :)

Cheers,

Dave

Wall Browns seem to be in vogue right now. You have encouraged me to get out and see if I can find any myself on my patch.

Many thanks everyone. I am glad you have enjoyed my adventures with the Wall Browns.
Now for more of the same...............

This morning I had Tide Mills in my sights, but again stopping off at High and Over on the way.
I arrived under a cloudless sky, with a temperature of 16c. Once in the meadow at the bottom
of the steps I was sheltered from the persistent cool breeze, and the direct sun soon made it
uncomfortably hot !. The warmth of the sun had already made the Wall Browns very active,
and I was soon joining in with their chases.
Only males were on the wing, including one poor specimen, well past his prime.

I later returned to the car to resume my journey to Tide Mills and the temperature was still 16c
according to the reading on my info screen.
Tide Mills was very quiet, with only a few Whites on the wing. By now the constant breeze was becoming stronger,
keeping any Clouded Yellows present, in hiding.

HI Allan.

Steyning is certainly worth a look. BH have been seen at this stage in September in previous years.
But, if any are found they will be past their best.

Good luck,
Trevor.

Had things turned out differently today I would have been posting another Wall Brown report.
I am currently in Wiltshire, so this morning I popped up to St. Peters church to see if any Wall Browns were present.
None were seen, but there was a gale force wind blowing.
However I did find four species in about an hour, three fresh Commas, including one with very strong markings,
A fresh Red Admiral, two fresh Speckled Woods and a Large White.

Not bad for a day of wind and sharp showers.
