i saw this skipper yesterday... do you think it is a Small or an Essex ?

Sure it's not a Large Skipper Charles?

Hi Charles,
That's definitely a Large Skipper, irrespective of its size. Both the Small and Essex Skipper have homogenous golden-brown upper wings (none of that patterning which your specimen shows), apart from the prominent sex-brands in the males. These appear as short black lines, at mid-point within the forewing.
