Sarota sp.

Post by Tony Moore »

Couldn't resist posting this stunning photo of a Sarota species, taken by a Canadian friend of mine in Ecuador. I think it may be chrysus, but am happy to be corrected. These 'jewelmarks' are really something else

Hi Tony,

What a remarkable, stunning little butterfly !! I have a book on butterflies of Ecuador somewhere in the house, if I can find it in there, I will let you know. Do you know where exactly in Ecuador this was taken (Mindo maybe?).

Hi, Sylvie,

I believe it was somewhere called the 'Bilsa Reserve'. It's certainly high on my bucket list of places to visit .

I go for chrysus. There's a photo of a very similar individual, also from Ecuador, here:

What a truly fabulous butterfly,

I have to wonder how evolution came up with such a stunning pattern? I could almost believe in God!
