Some unknowns from Marseilles

Post by Chris Jackson »

Hi Folks,
Here is a moth which particularly attracted my attention because it held its wings folded for a while, like a butterfly.
ID?

It has been suggested that this is the caterpillar of Zygaena sp.. Any idea which species ?

Hi Chris,
Your moth is an Angle Shades moth.
The caterpillars look as though they could be some sort of Burnet moth, possibly a 5-spot?

The burnet larva is most likely the Narrow-bordered 5 spot Burnet.

Thank you very much, Nick and Mikhaïl,
Both these IDs check out. That tidies up some of my unknowns but I feel I've got some other uncertainties coming up.
Cheers,
Chris
