Hello from a Newbie!

Post by Annie »

Hello, my name is Annie and I've always had more than a passing interest in butterflies (growing up with drawers of pinned specimens tends to fire a girl's enthusiasm, especially before she's old enough to understand that butterflies are better on-the-wing than under-the-pin).

Now I'm looking to increase my small amount of knowledge, and find good sites to view butterflies, especially Purple Emperors.

I shall be getting a digital camera soon, which I hope will be help me in identifying species. It's always so difficult to remember exactly what you've seen when you're looking it up in a book afterwards!

Hi Annie,

Welcome aboard! :)

What part of Somerset? (I grew up near Cheddar).

Tell more about growing up with drawers of pinned specimens, that's genuinely interesting...was a member of your family a collector..? (only if you don't mind me asking...)

Felix.

Of course I don't mind you asking!

My Grandfather was a prolific collector of butterflies up until his death in the early seventies (I wasn't born until later). He was also an author of butterfly books/checklists, at least one of which I understand is still well respected even today, forty years after it was published.

That's tantalising information Annie :)

Also - you're near the only Large Blue colonies in the UK - the most well-known site being Collard Hill.

Cheers,
