Grizzled Skipper - Favourite Photo of 2016

Week 7

Week seven and we're now offically a third of the way through the 'Favourite shots of 2016'! Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos - just to make it easier to organise and keep everything on track so that we can enjoy this throughout the winter months? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As like last year details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Not a particularly good year for these so I made the most of the ones I did come across. I like this one, found early one morning at Aldbury Nowers, a bit of cunning cropping gave me one of my favourite images of the year

and this one helped me add the Grizzled Skipper to my list of 'Butterflies on their LHP'

Here is my Grizzled Skipper contribution from the south of France in early June.

It may arguably be P. malvoides, but can anyone tell the difference ?

Another species I saw fewer of than in previous years, and there were not many photos. They were around at Denbies in May, and here are a couple from the 15th. I like the underside view, something I have very few photos of at all.

Hello all,
I,ve posted 3 shots taken ,locally in a section of The Orlestone forest (Kent),Grizzlies seem to be disappearing from this forest,block by block ,but still hang on here and there ,one picture is a roosting individual(and an Abberation !) , the only grizzle I managed on this occasion,as the weather turned while I was en-route,the second is a AB;Intermedia
that looks as though its been out for a few Days ,and the last ,a pair,both ABS; was a bit peeved ,that the 4 shots I took all had one butterfly a bit out of focus.!!

Allan, that's a great shot of an aberrant alveus underside. We've all seen extreme uppersides but that first image is really striking.

Thanks for the comments and ID David. re- Grizzled Skipper picture,i,ve just realised that I,d posted the underside shot before( Sightings May 14th),and with it ,an upperside shot(partially obscured)
I think I came up with AB;Scabellata at the time (May),but with your ID, I think I,d better have a re-think ! Thanks again .Regards Allan.W.

Grizzled Skipper

This was taken at my Duke site and was the second individual that I found in 2016 (the first nipped off about 5 seconds prior to this shot). It’s my favourite as it’s possibly the best underside view/shot that I’ve gotten. I just love the way that the underside is all rosy and white even with the little rose stripe running down the abdomen.
