Black Hairstreak - Favourite Photo of 2016

Week 1 - Here we go!

Starting this week the first opportunity to showcase your favourite shots of 2016! Please could I ask that everyone waits until a topic has been opened by me for a particular species before posting photos - just to make it easier to organise and keep everything on track so that we can enjoy this throughout the winter months? Of course our overseas members are very welcome to fill in the obvious gaps relating to rare UK migrants. As like last year details of locations, dates, times and circumstances would be welcome as would any accompanying stories and anecdotes or other observations of behaviour and interesting other points.

Have a goodun

So those who followed my PD throughout the year may remember I made a concerted effort to get myself a Black Hairstreak lifer this year. It took 3 visits to Monks Wood but I finally managed it, just the one sighting late on in their season which lasted all of about 30 seconds but a memorable one nonetheless. It happened shortly after bumping into Philib doing his transect, when as I was lining up a shot of a Meadow Brown she fluttered down and settled on a leaf next to me :D

Overcast day, late in the flight period - but there were still plenty about in their usual spot at Glapthorn Cow Pastures on 3rd July.

Sometimes butterflying is very easy. You park by the site, walk 200 yards to the hot spot, and there are 4 or 5 of your target species sitting quietly nectaring on bramble :D These were taken 2 minutes apart at Glapthorn Cow Pasture on July 2nd this year.

p.s. despite resizing and extra sharpening the photos still look disappointingly fuzzy here :x
