ID for flying insect, Italy

I came across this unusual insect on the shore of Lago D'Idro, Italy, the other day, anyone seen it before?
ID please.

Hi Russ,

This is a potter wasp. I have seen those gathering mud for building their nest in France. They are very impressive insects.
Not sure what they are called though.

Thanks Sylvie for your interest, I forgot to say that it wasn't small, about 4 cms long.

I think it belongs to the genus Sceliphron, known as mud daubers. They prey on spiders.
