Tree of the Year 2016 (saving a Hairstreak colony too)

Hi everyone
You may or may not have heard about the Sheffield Elm tree I'm trying to save from felling being shortlisted for English Tree of the Year 2016, following my nomination.

See below weblink to the national BBC News article. It also featured on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning, briefly on Radio 4, in the Guardian, and in the local press again.

I'd really appreciate it if you could vote for the tree yourself, and also, most importantly, spread the word to all your friends, family, neighbours and contacts.

The better this tree does, the more publicity we bring to the wider tree campaign. And if we secure 500 votes, we raise £500 for spending on the tree and hopefully saving the White Letter Hairstreak colony!

Shame we can't choose a second preference as there's another mature elm in Brighton that's not far behind in the desirability stakes (only this one's not as 'personalised' as Paul's Sheffield specimen).

Agreed, there are tough competitor trees. Just hoping that most UK Butterfly'ers are as swayed as you about the butterfly hosting amazingness of the Sheffield tree!

There were a lot of other fantastic trees there (I love trees!!), but the Sheffield Elm seems to be the only one that us under unnecessary threat.

Hi everyone
Just a quick update on this. The competition closes at 5pm on Sunday 9th October.

Last years winner was a pear tree on the route of the HS2 line. As a result it achieved huge publicity in the national media. Even so, it received 4000 votes to make it a winner.

This years competition has received less national publicity, and from various stuff on social media, and including this forum, it seems as though "my tree" the Chelsea Road Elm Tree in Sheffield has already got around 1000 votes. It suggests we're really in the running to win.

So please keep on voting, and telling all who you know to vote too. Fingers crossed we can win, save the elm tree, and save the White Letter Hairstreak colony.
