I have been using a basic Nikon Coolpix 7600 digital camera for the past few years with excellent results, however I have to get within inches of the butterfly and most fly off. I have purchased a Canon 400d camera and for Birding, a Sigma 70-300mm APO lens which i am going to sell, which for birding is great but the results on butterflies are very dissapointing. I just can't seem to get a truly sharp image. does anyone have any ideas on a good but not over priced Macro lens that will produce some nice sharp images again.

Depends on what you mean by over-priced. I recently acquired a Tamron SP 70-210mm CF F3.5-4 Adaptall 2 ( fits any 35mm camera with the right mount) for the princely sum of £5.50 on ebay! The CF stands for continuous focus (down to 1:2 Macro). On a digital camera, it is a 105-315mm zoom. There are snags of course, no autofocus and manual metering, though I use a Minolta Autometer IV for incident light readings (eliminates burn out on white wings!). Rates 10/10 on value for money and, as an SP, it performs quite well too!
