Didn't realise it was open yet, as it has not been posted to the forums - only on the home page and easily missed :D

Congratulations to Iain Leach and John Bogle, who took the first 3 places between them in the annual 2015 UK Butterflies Annual Photography Competition! With a superb photo of a Small Blue, Iain wins a copy of The Video Guide to the Butterflies of Britain and Ireland (DVD) which has been kindly donated by NatureGuides. The winning entries can be viewed at: http://www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/competit ... s_2015.php

Thanks to all who entered. In addition to those who came in the top 3, the following photographers received a vote from at least one judge:

Bob Eade, Pete Smith, Ian Pratt, The Annoying Czech and Fiery Jack.

Thanks also to my fellow judges.

Cheers,

- Pete

A lot of very high quality images this year. Iain's wining Small Blue image is a dream of a shot, I've never seen a Small Blue look so magnificent, wish I took it.

I couldn't agree more - I've never seen a Small Blue image that even gets close to that! I had Iain in second place too, but for his female Common Blue. An unsurprising result really, as amongst the excellent butterfly photographers who inhabit UK Butterflies, I consider Iain to be the best.

Congratulations to all the winners and runners up, and the many others who produced some stunning entries. Thanks, as always, to the judges - an increasingly tough job.

BWs, Neil

Many thanks everyone. Obviously I'm pleased with the result but there were a lot of other superb photos this year that could easily have been placed too. Some great shots in there from Bob, Neil (lovely LTB) and Nigel to name but a few. And thanks too to Pete and the other judges for taking the time to organise the competition. Iain

Well done to all those who entered and thanks as always to Pete and his fellow judges for taking the time to judge the competition. As everyone else has said, Iain's Small Blue was outstanding but his Wood White is also an absolute corker! Well done Iain, all the podium and everyone who entered.

Cheers

Congratulations to Iain and all the winners and runners up of the separate categories. Some superb entries, a number of which I thought could have been worthy winners.

Cheers,

Neil.

Having just examined the entries again I feel it is almost impossible to distinguish winners from also-rans as there are so many great images. I particularly liked Neil Freeman's pearl-bordered fritillary, and Ray Seagrove's marbled white which managed to match brilliantly the colour of the butterfly with the colour of the grass and the background.
Well done to all entrants. :D

Got to agree, I have no idea how the judges seperate the winning pictures, any of those mentioned would be well deserved winners!

Strangely enough (and this has never happened before to my knowledge) there was a single image that all of the judges felt was outstanding. I can tell you that when I scrolled through all of the images (which I always do on a first pass), Iain's photo of a Small Blue just jumped out at me. None of the other images can compete with this, in my opinion - it seems to be in a different league and one which I've never managed to join! 2nd place was harder to agree upon, 3rd place harder still, and so on!

Cheers,

Well done, Ian.

I don't claim to be an aficionado of what constitutes a good image as I don't have a background in photography; however, that Small Blue was indeed excellent so you deserve your accolades.
