Re: Has spring arrived? Nectar sources...

Post by NickB »

Don't know if this is the right place for this. But what nectar sources for emergees have other members seen being utilised?
I myself have tried to stick to native plants for the garden but in the Cemetery nearby I have seen seen only daisies used as well as the Mahonia that
both the Comma and Small Tortoiseshell were taking advantage of; I think I should widen my planting horizons!

Perhaps UK gardeners with a wider-range of flowering plants and shrubs throughout the year help ensure that generalists do thrive in comparison to specialists...

Think how excited we all would have been ten years ago to hear of a Comma in that part of Britain.

I occasionally saw Peacocks when I lived in the Aberdeen area in the 1980s and that is of course a lot further north, so the Berwickshire observation of a Peacock is less significant than that of a Comma.

Let us all know when you see your first Marbled White:-) Another 20 years perhaps?

OK who nicked spring? I saw a few Commas and just the one Peacock end of March and beginning of April. Then on Sunday 6th April it snowed!Spring shoots and leaves covered in thick white 'cotton wool'! That was surreal, especially in NW London. This week feels like winter again. I hope those spring emergees survive this long late cold snap OK.

For me the butterfly season is significantly later than last year.
