Need some help to identify a species

Hi there

I have never posted here before. I just wondered if you may be able to help. Two days ago we had a rather large dark blue butterfly on our windowsill. It was much bigger than say a red admiral and a type I have never seen before. Does anyone have any ideas what this may have been. I live in North East England if thats any help. Thanks

The description doesn't fit any wild British thing that I can think of, but have a look at a picture of a Camberwell Beauty, which is larger than a Red Admiral and mostly very dark purplish-brown. These are very rare migrants rom the continent from time to time.

Or maybe a Purple Emperor if it was shiny blueish-purple wit obvious white stripe inthe middle of the wings
