A Purple Hairstreak Please?

Post by Mike Robinson »

I spotted the character in the picture earlier today in our local Foots Cray Meadows:

I have not seen many Hairstreaks apart from a few Green Hairstreaks and one definite Purple Hairstreak on an Oak Tree.

There was a nearby Oak Tree and another couple of unidentified Trees; not I think Elm Trees.

The Oak Tree would suggest that my new acquaintance is a Purple Hairstreak; annoyingly, I didn't see the Wings Open.

However, looking at various pictures she/he seems not unlike a White Letter Hairsteak; that being said, I'm plumping for Purple Hairstreak in view of the nearby Oak Tree.

So help please. Thanks in advance ...

A White Letter Hairstreak it is!

They will sometimes fly a distance from their elms to take nectar.
