Re: Countryfile Sunday 3rd July - Large Blue
I yelled at the screen when that happened  Also how many times did the presenters let us know that they "haven't been seen in the Cotswolds for 50 years". I used to enjoy Countryfile but lately I think the quality has dropped quite a bit and I rarely watch a full show without getting ...

Re: Orange-tip larva query.
In the Butterflies of Britain and Ireland by Jeremy Thomas it says "It has been claimed that these hairs are really glands, which produce droplets of sweet liquid to attract ants that protect the caterpillars from enemies. If true, this must be very rare in England, for I have examined hundreds...

Re: Orange-Tip behavoiur
I dont think there was a crab spider there as I studied the plant quite carefully in my hunt for eggs and caterpillars. Also she was moving a bit yesterday evening when the sun came out. I suspect something has crept up on her in the darkness. I would never take revenge its all part of natures rich ...

Re: Dog Owner's Conduct (Split from Photographer's...)
Good points and I agree that certain areas should have a ban. I know for instance that many RSPB reserves do not allow dogs on site and I respect that. As a responsible dog owner I clean up after my dog and never take her anywhere near cows or sheep. Again I can see your points and its the irrespons...

Re: Orange-Tip behavoiur
Olivia is dead. I found 3 of her wings on the floor when I went to check on her this morning. What a rubbish start to the day!

Re: Photography Code of Practice
With regard to the canine question, many a country walk has been spoiled for me by irresponsible dog owners who fail to control their companions. However, the attractiveness of their deposits for certain species of butterfly cannot be denied... Dave Thats unforgivable as far as I'm concerned. I hav...

Re: Photography Code of Practice
I'm still upset because I do sometimes photograph road signs!  I think there is some merit to this idea if only as a guide for beginners. When I started butterfly watching about 5 years ago I didn't know anything about larval foodplants or nectar sources and probably destroyed some whe...

Re: Fritillary
Thanks Rogerdodge. I suspected it was a Pearl-bordered but just couldn't tell if the chevrons were floating or not. The image was taken at Eyarth Rocks reserve in North Wales on 27th April this year. I went there hoping to see these, Grizzled skippers and Dingy skippers but was unsuccessful on the s...

Re: Orange-Tip behavoiur
Olivia Orange Tip is still perching on the cuckooflower after 29 hours. We felt like we should name her as she's been here so long.

Re: Orange-Tip behavoiur
I noticed the same behaviour today by a female. It arrived in my garden at about 12:00 and started feeding on cuckooflower. She remained on the same flower all afternoon moving underneath it during a thunderstorm at 15:00. I bet the neighbours wondered what i was up to outside on my hands and knees ...
