Re: May 2010 sightings

Hi David If you want to see more Brimstones come to Surrey!!! Bucketloads of 'em round here :) Just (cautiously) wondering if some of your Large Whites might actually have been female Brimstones? I've hardly seen any Large Whites down here so far, and I keep leaping at distant/brief Brimstones just ...

Re: Orange Tip Ova

Hi Felix, I found Orange-tip eggs on the underside of Garlic Mustard leaves this year too, although I've never searched for them there before. And quite a few looking lost halfway along bare stems. What surprised me most though was commonly finding three or four eggs on the same floret when many pla...

Re: May 2010 sightings

A short (90mins) visit to Noar Hill in cloudy, cool mizzle/light rain resulted in a Dingy Skipper and a single male Duke of Burgundy . Why does it insist on being rubbish weather on my day's off work??? I can recommend The Queens in nearby Selbourne for grub though :) So that's another species safely...

Re: May 2010 sightings

Enjoyed our first ever visit to Bentley Woods today...complete cloud cover and a cool breeze didn't dampen our spirits and we were thrilled to photograph several Pearl-bordered Frits at point blank range. Plus there was the rather amusing sight of a Common Lizard running up someone's trouser leg :lo...

Re: May 2010 sightings

Hi all, a quick question if I may? Here in south London the weather has been pretty awful for the past two days, cold winds, near constant grey skies and much rain, particularly through the nights. I was actually stuck in a hailstorm midday today! And I haven't seen a single butterfly for three days...

Re: Glanville Fritillary

Hi there, hope this reaches you in time to be useful...another UK Butterflies Member who lives on IOW has seen Glanvilles (and photographed them) flying at "Wheelers Bay Ventnor"...his first of the season. That was on Sat 1st May. Best of luck, the weather was miserable in Portsmouth today...

Re: April 2010 Sightings

Well, at the end of April I'm on a grand total of 15 species of (adult) butterflies for the year, plus Purple Hairstreak larva and Brown Hairstreak egg. And that's three more than Sami - my girlfriend - so I'm a happy bunny!!! :D 'Course she'll doubtless catch up soon enough... We're attempting a BI...

Re: April 2010 Sightings

Finally getting in some decent butterflying in Surrey... picked up my first 2010 Speckled Woods, Holly Blue, Large and Small Whites over the past week or so, plus some very tiny Purple Hairstreak larvae on pedunculate oak buds. Hoping for Green Hairstreak on Epsom Common any day now, I haven't seen ...

Re: April 2010 Sightings

FINALLY clawed back Small Tort from Sami today when one almost flew into my truck window in South London. A warm 30mins in Carshalton resulted in another Small Tort, a Peacock and a male Brimstone. Also Harlequin Ladybird flying in Sutton. Yearlist = 4 species. No sign of any whites yet though, why ...

Re: April 2010 Sightings

Just before it all kicks off properly, and before we're all pleasantly distracted with the adults, there's still time left to look for things like hairstreak eggs before the leaves come out. I'm finding loads of Purple Hairstreak eggs on Epsom Common, some of which we're tagging for ease of relocati...

Re: March 2010 Sightings

Gibster's going down??? Hardly, today I've scored Purple Hairstreak eggs on Epsom Common...which combined with Ashtead's Brown Hairstreak egg means I'm already halfway to a very, very small omelette! Still no adults of any species yet though. I should make it clear that Sami is ultra keen and last s...

Re: March 2010 Sightings

Hi All, this is my first time here and my first ever post on this site! I'm Sami's boyfriend. I can only apologise for her mega-early "skipper" sightings, she's utterly lovable and ultra keen but definitely prone to moments of pure insanity (and trust me, I should know!!!) Epsom Common has...
