Can you squeeze in two more please, Sam and I are keen to join you all. How/when do we need to get the deposit money to you Susie?

Cheers,

Gibster.

Re: Seth & Sami centre-page spread!

How cool is THAT!!! 8) Hopefully it will generate a whole heapload more donations. The justgiving site is curre...

Re: AES - 6th Oct 2012

Just posting to keep this thread on the homepage! If you've never been before it's an AMAZING experience. £4 for adults, £2 for kids. Can't be bad :D

PS - it can get pretty warm in the halls, could be a good idea to bring a small bottle of water, saves queuing up to buy one!

Cheers,

Gibster.

Re: hideandseek

It's definitely a cranefly, and a female too (pointy tip to the abdomen) - possibly the very common Tipula paludosa . Certainly the wing length looks shorter than the abdomen length, which seems right for the species. But there are quite a few of them so don't take that as a definitive ID! Cheers, G...

Re: Bees?

They're not rampant stingers then, Gibster? Not this particular individual. It took a brief liking to the corner of my eye, which was a tad worrying. Then it deposited a small, orange glob of liquid on my nose and clambered merrily into my hair. Finding neither a mate or food source it left me unmo...

Ivy Bee 2.jpg They also seem to quite like my face. Guess my resemblance to a bare earthen bank is quite striking... This was in St Blazey, Cornwall on 13th October last year. They nest in my friend's flower bed and swarm his ivy bushes (late flight season to coincide with the late flowering ...

Re: September 2012

Hi David, in answer to your question we managed a rather appalling 21 species on our Land's End to John O'Groats Honeymoon Walk. The species we saw were as follows: Large Skipper - just a few Brimstone - commonplace, adults and larva (although the species is absent from Scotland! No foodplant, you s...

Re: September 2012

Oh Yeah Baby...MONARCH ON MY LIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quite a fearless chap, allowed a close approach whilst gorging on buddlehia. I probably could've done my trademark "put it on my nose trick" but there were folk watching... :D :D :D And at nearby Lodmoor I saw some dodgy dowitcher th...

Re: Dave Brown

Hiya Dave, you've clearly been spending lots of time in the field lately, lucky fella :) Regards your Southern Oak Bush-cricket at Dungeness, I'd offer one obvious explanation as to how it got there - as a passenger in somebody's car. I've had both the Oak Bush-crickets inside the cab of my truck fr...

Re: Autumn Social

Yep, I'll definitely be there - whenever. Providing my boss is speaking to me by then. It was great to put faces to names/tags. And who knows what outfit I may be wearing (or not, lol). But Pete definitely needs to be there. It would be like having the Royal Jubilee Party without the Queen attending...

Re: Epic Butterfly Walk!

Hi All, sitting out a pasing storm front in Fort William at the mo so we've ducked into an internet cafe. Hence I'm posting this time (Sami won't let me near her precious iphone in case my over-size fingers break it!) Shame there has (thus far...) been insufficient interest in the "naked ramble...

Re: How Can Ticks Be Avoided?

I've had a handful of ticks attach themselves to my legs over the years, no adverse reaction or bulls eye rashes noticed. My wife had one attach itself to her belly button once, presumably whilst she was lying spread-eagled in the grass getting her camera lens eyeball to eyeball with a butterfly. (K...

A-HA!!! :D :D :D Well that certainly put a smile on these two wet and weary souls' faces!!! As Lee (rather subtly  ) mentioned, we've still a very long way to go regards hitting our £10,000 target. If you do donate (and why wouldn't you?) you'll be asked if you would like to pay Gift Aid. THIS...

Re: Epic Butterfly Walk!

Hi All, we've followed our route northwards and are now in Kendall enjoying our second rest day of the trip. You may have seen this on the news already - Kendall suffered a major flash flood which saw the River Kent burst its banks and flood the city centre. Whilst the phenomenal downpour (and rathe...

Re: Epic Butterfly Walk!

Well, despite YET MORE torrential downpours, high winds and generally rubbish weather...we've made it to Wigan in one piece. We're taking a canal route northwards to Kendal as the next leg of our journey. Sami's leg finally stopped giving her pain just 4 days ago (poor girl, a whole month suffering ...

HAHAHA! Thanks for that Roger, I'm sure Sami will love that pic when she checks in on her beloved iphone  Seriously though folks, we really are doing this all on a shoestring and a chat with my boss earlier this morning didn't go as well as I'd hoped... :( Roger and his lovely wife Rose were t...

Re: May 2012

Yesterday (29th) we saw a Painted Lady nectaring on Red Valerian in Dunster town centre, quite severely damaged and looking rather odd with just two and a half wings remaining! Between Dunster and Watchet we counted over 30 Walls, 10 Holly Blues, 2 fresh looking Red Admirals, a few Peacocks, lots of...

Re: Epic Butterfly Walk!

Well, we've managed to finally find an internet cafe! The putative panther seems to have caused a stir, but it simply pales into insignificance alongside our ghostly encounter on a quiet lane, miles from anywhere....are you sitting comfortably? Then I shall begin... :) We'd just clambered up a parti...

Re: Differences between males and females?

Well, regardless of differences in markings between the sexes, some males have 3 eye spots on each hindwing whilst others have 4 eye spots. In some cases at least, it seems that males that actively patrol their territory tend to have 4 eye spots (presumably to add extra confusion towards attacking b...
