Re: Dave Brown

Hi Dave, just a quickie...regards that Smew pic taken on 5th Jan at Dunge. Did you notice the drake Ring-necked Duck sitting behind it?   I was reading your blog and did a bit of a double-take at that pic. I've looked at it on zoom, and it still looks pretty good to me. Cheers,...

Re: White-letter Hairstreak egg hunt

Hi there, I'm very keen to find my own WLH eggs asap. Could you give any hints and tips please? Purple Hairstreak eggs are easy. I've found Brown Hairstreak eggs too. But absolutely zippo when searching elms (other than overwintering Coleophora cases and the occasional ladybird). I read that many hu...

Clearly it failed to intercept a thrown stick or lump of soil...hence female! :D

(and if that makes no sense whatsoever, check your Thomas & Lewington!!)

99% of the nettle leaves folded up like that that I investigate seem to contain either a) a spider or b) a caterpillar of quite a different type which thrashes around before throwing itself to the ground. I must learn the subtle differences in construction technique... Hi there, I'm guessing that y...

Re: January 2011

It is odd that the winter Red Admirals seem to cling to the south coast, and that there are not more reports from around London, where the butterfly would benefit both from the urban heat island effect and from large numbers of winter-flowering shrubs being available. In recent years there have bee...

Re: Have Butterfly-Conservation gone nuts?

It's good to be critical of a charity's bad practice, but if there is evidence that a charity is doing good work across the country then maybe it would be wise to overlook a few of their faults? Let's face it, Butterfly Conservation is far from being the worst offender when it comes to money wasting...

Brilliant suggestion! I'm wholeheartedly for this proposal. I await the outcome with much impatience  Gibster (going to Ireland in May and July, Scotland in June, Cumbria in June, Norfolk in June, IOS in July, walking Land's End to John O' Groats July onwards...anyone wanna tag along/split cos...

Taleporia tubulosa in the New Forest today, those underwhelming sightings just keep on coming lol! Regards finding Brown Hairstreak eggs; I can't offer anything not readily found in the books, ie edges of blackthorn thickets in good light, on the young growth, less than 4ft above ground level etc e...

Re: Ordnance Survey Maps

That's really good to know, Jack. Thanks for sharing. Sami and I intend to walk Land's End to John o' Groats this coming July (no, I don't really know why either. Even my boss says I'm crazy, and he's a nice fella!) The printable maps will undoubtably be a massive boon, especially as we can customis...

Re: Paul Wetton

I'd never even heard of Skin-so-Soft until last summer. The Highlanders absolutely swear by it. We tried it and yep it really does work. The midges land in it and die. Sweet! And, of course, it leaves your skin ever so...er...soft! :D :D PS - I look 'orrific in white stockings, black brings out the ...

Re: Paul Wetton

I envy you with campervans. I hate putting the tent up. I find that the Highland Midge can be very bothersome in peak Chequered Skipper season. They seem particularly hungry at tent-putting-up time. The solution is simple, cover your arms, legs and face in thick black nylon stockings, work fast and...

Gibster, you are a true stalwart! Well, I've been called plenty of names in my time.... Decent sightings of Bittern, Snow Bunting, Shorelark, Waxwings, Hen Harriers, Corn Buntings etc etc has helped stave off January's non-lepidoptera madness. Plus I still need to find myself those elusive W...
