Re: May 2012

Sunday the 6th I paid a visit to Livermead Meadows near Torquay, a single Peacock and two Orange Tips (Male & Female) female was receptive but obviously did not come up to his standards so he flew off.

Re: March 2012

I was interested in the apparently quick recovery of the ST population from the parasite attacks, my suspicion is that perhaps it is not as "native" to the UK as might be generally percieved and that our population might be depentdant on imigrant butterflies to maintain it., I think that t...

Re: New Camera choice.

I bought a FZ45 in October 2010, sadly it departed this world after I fell off my bike in April 2011 (and I had not bought a warrantly with it), its replacement is a Fuji HS20 (not yet butterfly christened), DSLRwise I invested in a Sony a65 in January although the main mission for its 24 megapixels...

Re: March 2012

Small Tortoiseshell in the churchyard at Moretonhampstead in Devon on Friday 2nd March, not bad to have a first normal sighting of the year at 650 ft above sea level on Dartmoor. Sadly not the best lens for butterflies but at least it was the first butterfly for my Sony a65 camera

I saw a Red Admiral in Hollicombe Gardens near Paighton at about 1330 yesterday, several flies and a hoverfly also active.

Re: October 2011 sightings

Very surprised to see a single small copper during a lengthy walk in the Trent valley on Sunday. In the margins of an agricultural field between the Nottinghamshire villages of Fiskerton and Morton. In decent condition too. I often used to see Small Coppers up until around the 20th October in South...

This Speckled wood was sunning itself on Pampas Grass at Hollacombe Gardens near Paignton yesterday afternoon, I also saw at two others there as well.

Re: September 2011

A quick tour of the Cemetery this morning revealed 31 Red Admirals.. Egad! I suppose I should congratulate you for the effort expended in counting them all. :) That's nothing - someone in Suffolk counted 75 at one site!!!! N Hopefully if the weather conditions are suitable we should see a f...

It was doing it about five minutes if I remember correctly. It almost reminds me of one of the conductors of the local brass band :D

Re: Planted some common buckthorn!

Sad to report that no Brimstones appeared this summer - I was not really surprised as I saw no eggs in the Spring. It is about 12 miles from the nearest colony so probably the odds are against a female finding them first time. The buckthorn itself has held it's own but is not exactly thriving - I m...

Re: September 2011

Its worth keeping a look out for Ivy Bees, in flight from now until early November and spreading (especially in coastal areas), they look like a small honey bee. They have been about around Torquay for the past few days.

Re: September 2011

Some forty years ago I saw a male Orange Tip in Cheshire is late August, thankfully there were no national forums around at the time. It was a surprise seeing it but I never even considered it other than a simple one off due to some peculiar circumstance. The fact that one Heath Fritillary may have ...
