Re: Hautes Pyrénées - 6th to 10th July 2023

Wow! Female Peak Whites don't come along very often. I have only once been fortunate enough to get a photograph. Excellent find!

Re: Greenwings: French Alps, 24 June to 1 July 2023

Nymphalidae - Fritillaries It spoke volumes that one of the commonest of this group was Marsh Fritillary, which we often do not see in an early or 'normal' season on this trip: Once again, the headline was more what we didn't see, which was the bulk of the montane members of the group, such as Cynt...

Re: A Greek Meze: lifers, half-lifers, and near-misses in Macedonia

Post script I had meant to include a few photographs of Small Coppers in this report, so I am adding these on as a post-script. During my travels in Greece, both on the mainland and on the islands, I have often noticed how much darker the Small Coppers tend to be than those we see in the UK, and yet...

Re: June 2023

I then managed to photograph mating silver-washed fritillaries with a female valezina and then in the same photograph two pairs mating. Hopefully, things may improve even more now. That's pretty remarkable Ian! I can't imagine there are many photographs taken in the wild with two mating pairs of pa...

Re: A Greek Meze: lifers, half-lifers, and near-misses in Macedonia

Another huge effort from you, Pete. So disappointing that the weather caused problems as it did for our group not long before you arrived. It really has been an appalling season thus far in much of southern Europe. Still, you found some wonderful stuff, especially kreuperi and penia . Thanks David....

Re: A Greek Meze: lifers, half-lifers, and near-misses in Macedonia

Pete What a trip, so many memories! Here's my Yellow Legged Tortoiseshell picture. I only got the one. To be honest I didn't give it too much attention as I was looking for Clouded Apollo's at the time. Wish I had now. Bob - it was tremendous! I've just finished collating all of the records. We had...

Re: A Greek Meze: lifers, half-lifers, and near-misses in Macedonia

...very jealous about the Kreuper's Small White. It's a bit of a bogey species for me, having been where it should be four times now, in different locations and different years. Every time, the season has been early, late etc. One day! Paul - I had the same experience for years with krueperi ! I se...

Re: A Greek Meze: lifers, half-lifers, and near-misses in Macedonia

Part 3 On the way to our final base we decided to pay a visit to Mount Pangaion, and here for the first time since arriving in Thessaloniki the Sat Nav made a bit of an error. Me and Mrs Nav had been getting on quite well this time. I mean, no budding romance or anything, but certainly we hadn’t fal...

Re: A Greek Meze: lifers, half-lifers, and near-misses in Macedonia

Part 2 Due to the rearrangement of our itinerary and the cancellation of Bulgaria, we had to move to another hotel on Saturday, so we packed up and went for a last breakfast at Hotel One. The weather had taken over our thoughts. This wasn’t Greek weather. I pressed Bob for the latest forecast over b...

A Greek Meze: lifers, half-lifers, and near-misses in Macedonia

This report pens the adventures of a group of four intrepid travellers as they forage for butterflies across a large swathe of remote Macedonia in Northern Greece. The Liverpudlian contingent of Bob Lambert and his wife Veronica met up with the Lincolnshire couplet of myself and my wife, Vicki, in M...

Re: The oedippus odyssey: a single-species quest in West France

One further observation on your oedippus images, Pete, possibly the most surprising, is that you got open wing shots which, as far as I can see, are as rare as hen's teeth. Roger Yes. There is an open winged image on pyrgus.de and Matt Rowlings has a half open image on his site, but other than thos...
